Phileas Fogg was a tall and handsome man in his forties. He was rich, and he lived alone in a large house at 7 Savile Row, Burlington Gardens.
He had one servant and his daily schedule never changed: he ate his breakfast of tea and toast at 8.23 a.m. exactly; he shaved at 9.37 a.m., and brushed his hair at exactly 9.50 a.m. every day. Then, from 11.30 a.m. until midnight, he spent his time at the Gentlemen’s Club.
On 2 October 1872, he waited for his new servant to arrive.

The doorbell rang at 11 a.m. when a thirty-year-old Frenchman arrived
Phileas: You must be John Passepartout. Come in, John. Are you French?
Passepartout: Yes, I am French, but my name is not John. It is Jean. Jean Passepartout.
I have worked as a singer, circus performer, gymnast and fireman in the past; but now, I want a quiet life.
Phileas: I have heard good things about you. You’re hired! But I must tell you that I like everything to be on time

Phileas gave his new servant a long list, and then he put on his hat and left for the Gentlemen’s Club. Alone in the house, Passepartout looked around. Everything was tidy

Passepartout: This is just what I want! Oh, I am looking forward to a quiet life!

At the Gentlemen’s Club, Phileas walked straight to the dining room. At his usual table, he ate fish and potatoes. Then he drank some tea. He read his newspaper in his usual chair until 3.45 p.m. and then had dinner.
At 5.40 p.m., Andrew and Ralph arrived at the club. They started talking about the ‘gentleman thief’, who stole 55,000 pounds from the Bank of England.
Andrew: He could be anywhere by now! The world is such a large place!
Phileas: The world is smaller than it was!

Phileas showed the men an article in The Daily Telegraph. It was about modern transportation and said it was possible to travel around the world in eighty days
Andrew: Well, it looks possible on paper, but it can’t be done. Don’t forget that engines break down, and just one delay can cause problems
Ralph: And what about the bad weather – and all the other things that can go wrong?

Phileas: It is possible!
Ralph: Well, I will pay you 4,000 pounds if you can prove it!
Phileas: I bet 20,000 pounds that it is possible! And I will do it!

Phileas and Passepartout started their journey on a train from London to Calais. They crossed the mountains to Turin in northern Italy and then went to Brindisi. They boarded the Mongolia, a boat sailing for India. On its way to Bombay, the Mongolia stopped at Suez for two hours. Detective Fix was waiting for the ship there.
Fix: Aha! I am sure the gentleman thief is on that boat. I will catch him and receive the large reward from the Bank of England!

Detective Fix carefully examined the passengers as they got off. When Passepartout showed him their passports, the detective’s eyes opened wide.

Fix: Whose is this passport?
Passepartout: It belongs to my master, Phileas Fogg.
Fix: And where are you going?
Passepartout: We are going to Bombay. My master wants to stamp his passport at every stop on the journey. He wants to prove that he can go around the world in eighty days!

Fix let them go but sent a telegram to the police in London asking for an arrest warrant for Fogg.

Fix boarded the Mongolia because he wanted to watch Phileas Fogg more closely.

Fix: Hmmmm… He looks honest, but he can’t trick me! I know that he is the gentleman thief!
Passepartout: Hey, I know you! You checked our passports at Suez. Are you travelling to Bombay too?

Fix and Passepartout became friends. They drank tea together every day until the Mongolia reached Bombay on 20 October.

In Bombay, the arrest warrant was not there. Detective Fix was very disappointed – and he was even more disappointed when he found out that Phileas was planning to leave for Calcutta at 8 p.m. that day.

Passepartout went to the market to buy some things. He saw dancers, snake charmers and other strange things there. On his way back, he saw a beautiful building and went in, but he didn’t know that he had to take his shoes off. Angry people started shouting at him and chasing him. Passepartout ran barefoot all the way to Phileas.

Phileas: What you have done is against the law here. You must be more careful, Passepartout!

Phileas Fogg and Passepartout took the train to Calcutta at 8 p.m. on 20 October. From their window, Passepartout saw a jungle with tigers, elephants and snakes. But Phileas was not interested; he kept on talking with Sir Francis Cromarty.

Sir Francis: The Great Indian Railway saves you a lot of time. You are very lucky, dear Fogg.
Phileas: Why do you say that?
Sir Francis: Well, the train used to stop at the Western Ghats mountains and then we used to cross by pony. Without this train, you would lose your bet!

The train stopped at a village, and all the other passengers got off. Only Phileas, Passepartout and Sir Francis stayed on the train.

Sir Francis: Excuse me, but our train tickets say from Bombay to Calcutta. This is not Calcutta!
Conductor: Well… yes – but everybody knows that the railway isn’t finished! This is the last stop. You must find another way to go to Calcutta.
Phileas: Hmmm… Let’s see! We can use that elephant over there. Excuse me, sir! We need your elephant. Is 1,000 pounds enough?

Phileas bought the elephant for 2,000 pounds, and the three men started their journey. In the morning, they arrived outside a small village, where they saw some people following a strange cart full of flowers.

Sir Francis: It is a sati; that young woman’s husband is dead. She is going into the fire with him
Phileas: She doesn’t look like she wants to die. And she is so young and beautiful! We must save her
Sir Francis: And what about your bet?
Phileas: We have enough time to save the woman and win the bet.

In the morning, the men placed the sleeping woman next to her husband’s body on a pile of wood. Soon after, a guard lit a fire. Suddenly, people screamed.

People: Ahhh! He’s alive!

A figure stood up in the fire with the woman in his arms. There was a lot of smoke, noise and frightened people running everywhere. Phileas turned around and saw Passepartout carrying the sleeping woman

Aouda woke up in Calcutta on 25 October.

Aouda: Thank you for saving my life! My name is Aouda
Sir Francis: Well, my lady, your life is still in danger. You must leave India.
Aouda: I know. I must go to Hong Kong. My uncle lives there.
Sir Francis: I am Phileas Fogg and this is my servant, Passepartout. We are going to Hong Kong. You are welcome to join us. We are leaving on the Rangoon. There it is!

But a policeman arrested Fogg and Passepartout and took them to court instead. There, three angry men pointed to Passepartout. They held a pair of shoes.

Judge: Jean Passepartout! Did you enter an important Indian building in Bombay with your shoes on?
Passepartout: Yes, sir… It was a mistake! I am sorry
Judge: Very well. But it is not enough to say you’re sorry – you must go to jail for 15 days.
Phileas: Excuse me, judge. But we are in a hurry. Can we pay a fine instead?
Judge: Yes, you can; but the fine is 2,000 pounds.
Phileas: OK, then - I will pay it at once. There is no time to lose!

Detective Fix was disappointed when he saw Fogg on the Rangoon with Passepartout and Aouda. He decided to board the Rangoon, too.

Fix: (thinking) I will follow you, Phileas Fogg! I’ll catch you in Hong Kong
Passepartout: (thinking) Hmmm… I think he is a spy from the Gentlemen’s Club! He wants us to lose the bet!

Bad weather made the Rangoon arrive in Hong Kong twenty-four hours late. But luckily, the Carnatic, the ship going to Yokohama, was still in Hong Kong for repairs.
While Passepartout was buying the tickets to Yokohama, Phileas took Aouda to her uncle’s shop. However, he wasn’t there anymore. A man told them that he was in Europe
Phileas: Don’t worry, my dear. You can come to Europe with us!

Meanwhile, Fix tricked Passepartout to get on the boat without his master. The next day, Phileas and Aouda watched the Carnatic sail away without them. Passepartout was nowhere in sight.

Fix: Did you miss the Carnatic too?
Aouda: Yes, we did. Are you also going to Yokohama?
Fix: Yes, I am. Oh, well. There’s another boat for Yokohama next week.

But Phileas wasn’t worried. He went to talk with the captain of another boat, the Tankadere.

Phileas: The General Grant leaves from Yokohama for San Francisco on 14 November and I must be on it. Can you take me there?
Captain: That’s impossible but listen: The General Grant will be in Shanghai on 11 November before it leaves for Yokohama on 12 November. Would you like me to take you to Shanghai? The Tankadere can be ready in an hour.
Phileas: Yes, that’s a great idea! Would you like to join us, Mr Fix?

But let’s go back a little and see what happened to Passepartout… When he woke up on the Carnatic without his master or Aouda, he realized that he was going to Yokohama.

Passepartout: Oh no! That awful Fix tricked me! Now my master will lose his bet!

Alone in Yokohama, Passepartout was hungry, but he didn’t have any money – so he found a job in a circus.

Passepartout and the other acrobats made a pyramid. Suddenly, Passepartout saw two familiar faces in the audience and ran to them.

Passepartout: Master! Aouda! How did you find me?
Aouda: We talked to the captain of the Carnatic and he told us you were in Yokohama. Then we got lucky when we saw the circus.

Passepartout was happy to see his master and Aouda again, but he got very angry when he saw his master’s new friend – Fix! The detective now wanted to help Phileas go back to England so that he could arrest him there.

The General Grant arrived in San Francisco at 7a.m. on 2 December. Phileas, Aouda and Fix went for a walk and they saw two groups of angry people fighting. They were supporters of two different political parties

Man in the crowd: Hurray for Kamerfield!
Another man: No, boo for Kamerfield! Hurray for Mandiboy!
Fix: Oh, no! Look, they are hitting one another. Let’s get out of here!
Colonel Proctor: My name is Colonel Proctor, and I order you to stay here and fight!
Phileas: No! We do not support Kamerfield or Mandiboy. We are leaving. Please move.

At that, the man got very angry and tried to hit Phileas, but he hit Fix instead. Then Colonel Proctor disappeared into the crowd.

Luckily, the train left on time, but it stopped at noon. There were buffaloes on the train tracks. For three hours, they waited for the buffaloes to leave, but even then their problems weren’t over. The train stopped again at a bridge.

Driver: I can’t continue. The bridge will break
Passepartout: What are we going to do?
Driver: Don’t worry – I have a crazy plan!

He moved the train back, and then made it go as fast as possible. It went faster and faster over the train tracks and over the bridge; right after that, the bridge fell with a loud crash!

Inside the warm train, Phileas, Fix and Aouda talked while it snowed outside. Suddenly, Phileas saw Colonel Proctor coming in.

Phileas: Excuse me, Colonel Proctor. We have unfinished business
Colonel Proctor: I remember you! Are you going to run away again?
Phileas: No, I will stay and fight! Passepartout, give me a gun. We will have a duel!

Passepartout took out the guns but, at that very moment, they heard screams

Everyone: Indians!

Three Indians climbed onto the train and threw the driver off the train, while a group of Indians on horses chased the train.

Counductor: We must stop at the next station! There are soldiers there!
Passepartout: I know how to stop the train! I’ll do it!

Passepartout went under the train and managed to stop it near the soldiers. The Indians ran away, but they took Passepartout with them!

Phileas went to find Passepartout while Detective Fix and Aouda waited in the snow for twenty hours. Suddenly, Aouda saw the two men in the distance

Passepartout:My master is very brave. He fought the Indians and saved me!
Phileas: Where is the train?
Aouda: They couldn’t wait! They left without us
Passepartout: Oh no! What are we going to do now? The China leaves New York for Liverpool in a few hours! You will lose your bet because of me!
Fix: There is another way. Do you see that man over there? He can take us to Omaha on a sled with sails! Then we can catch a train to New York.

Phileas, Passepartout, Aouda and Fix finally arrived in New York, but they missed the China. As they watched the China sail away, Phileas talked to the captain of another ship.

Phileas: Can you take us to Liverpool?
Captain: No, we are going to Bordeaux – and I never take passengers on the Henrietta
Phileas: I will pay you 2,000 dollars per person. We are four people
Captain: For 8,000 dollars, I can take some passengers… but I will take you to Bordeaux, not Liverpool.

On December 13, the Henrietta was near Liverpool. The sailors worked fast, but the captain was angry because nobody was listening to him.!

Captain:Phileas Fogg, you’re a thief! You paid my sailors to take my ship to Liverpool instead of Bordeaux!
Phileas: I am sorry. You will go to Bordeaux after Liverpool
Captain: I don’t think so – there isn’t enough fuel for Liverpool. The ship will stop soon.
Phileas: Then I will buy your ship. I will burn all the wood on the ship and use it as fuel.
Captain: Are you serious? My ship costs 50,000 dollars!
Phileas: That’s OK. Here, take 60,000 dollars.
Captain: 60,000 dollars? But of course, take it, it’s yours!

Phileas Fogg arrived at Liverpool at noon on 21 December. He was only six hours away from London, but…
Fix: Are you Phileas Fogg?
Phileas: Yes, I am, Fix. You know me!
Fix: Then in the name of Her Majesty the Queen, I arrest you!
Phileas: What? Why are you arresting me?
Fix: Because you are the gentleman thief!
Phileas: No, I’m not! You’re making a mistake!

It was a mistake. The real gentleman thief was already in prison. Phileas, Aouda and Passepartout ran to Liverpool station immediately, but they missed the train. Phileas hired a special train – but when they finally arrived in London, it was 8.50 p.m.

Phileas: I am five minutes late. I have lost the bet!

The next morning, Phileas visited Aouda.

Phileas: Will you forgive me? I brought you here, but I have nothing now.
Aouda: Forgive you? You lost time because of me. You must forgive me
Phileas: I don’t care anymore. I love you, Aouda
Aouda: Then let’s get married. I love you, too!

Passepartout ran to prepare the papers for the wedding, but a little later he came running back.

Passepartout: Master, you must go to the Gentlemen’s Club immediately! You can still win the bet!
Phileas: What are you saying, Passepartout?
Passepartout: Listen! We gained a day because we went around the world from west to east and the time changed! Today is Saturday, not Sunday! Hurry up! You still have ten minutes!

The Gentlemen’s Club was full of people. Would Phileas Fogg win the bet?

Andrew: He isn’t coming. He wasn’t on the China yesterday – I checked.
Gauthier: It’s 8.40 p.m. and he isn’t here.
Ralph: Well, you all know Phileas. I’m sure he will arrive at the last minute.

Suddenly, there was noise outside and the door opened. It was exactly 8.45p.m

Phileas: Gentlemen, I am here. I have been around the world in eighty days… and here’s my passport to prove it!
